as some of you may know, the shorty water pump (Ford Racing M-8501-E351S) is still available, but it's hard to find the pulley set needed to go with.
found this the other day:

From my research, I thought the 94 and 95 Mustang 5.0 used the short shaft water pump and one had to only get a set of pulleys for them. I have the timing cover, pump, and pulleys from said Stang and it all looks like it will work great. Not on the engine yet, but waaaaay shorter than the typical SBF front plumbing. Someone may have more info than me, but a thought.

dan,
the explorer from this period also uses that pump and cover assembly. but those systems are reverse rotation and use serpentine pulleys and belt. ford calls this pump (http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:PH9 ... clnk&gl=us)
there Street Rod V-belt Pump. it's made for those that need the extra space but don't want or can't use the serpentine system. i used this pump to keep the old school look of the v-belt system. no one ever notices the short pump.
problem was, for reasons no one understands, shortly after introducing this pump ford stopped making the short pump pulley set to go with it.
not sure id do it again though, i could have saved a ton of money using the mustang/explorer system.

There I go assuming again........ didn't think to be talking about v belts. I am going to use the serpentine system for simplicity. Thanks for the response!

I'm thinking I'll need more room for an electric fan on my 63 Falcon wagon, so this post seemed to be a god send!
But $250 for a pulley? Geeze! You could get one custom machined for that!

Any other success stories with the short pump and the pulleys that go with it?
Thanks!

it's insane, the shorty pump is readily available and the pulleys are not. unless you don't mind getting gouged. i pulled out my old (4/28/06) receipt from summit: the pulley set was $144.88, of course I had to buy a water pump @ $129.95 and my application required a crank pulley spacer @ $25.88. even then this was a lot of money just for a little extra clearance.
another option would be a remote mounted inline electric water pump.
or maybe you could talk 5 other people into a group buy, much cheaper:

still, the shorty serpentine system has gotta be the cheapest, easiest way to go.
i've got a brand new cover, pump, pulley and fasteners i pulled off crate motor i'll dig out and donate to tffn after the holidays.

Thanks for the help... I'm not sure how much space I'll have... but I'm nervous. Will let you know how it works out. Radiator's on the way, then I'm gonna put the motor back in just to make sure it'll work before I redo the metal of the radiator support. I'm thinking of moving the rad forward, but I also need the AC condenser, and I know I'll soon run into the hood latch.
thanks again.

here's a source for a pulley set for the ford shorty water pump:

and as these things go, that's not a bad price.
